How did my mate cure?
BITTER MATTE TIPS:
1- Wash the inside of the mate with very hot water. If it boiled, let it cool to 80°. This is to disinfect and remove dust.
2- Fill it with grass. Some use used, moist yerba from another mate because it has less dust, but it can also be made with new yerba. Wait for it to swell after absorbing the water and add more warm water until the surface is moist. Let rest.
3- The next day, remove the grass and scrape the inside with a spoon to thoroughly remove the membranes or wood fragments.
4- Repeat the procedure from the beginning, but without washing the mate. After three or four times the curing will be completed and the mate is ready to be used.
SWEET MATTE TIPS:
1- Wash the inside of the container with very hot water. If it boiled, let it cool to 80 degrees. This is to disinfect and remove dust.
2- Add sugar, any type works. Two teaspoons are enough, unless the mate is too large then it may be necessary to add more. Then cover the mouth of the mate with your hand and shake it so that the sugar sticks to the walls.
3- Let it dry with the sugar. After a few hours the sugar should form a layer that covers the walls of the mate.
4- Burn it with charcoal. When the mate is dry, pour two small embers of hot charcoal inside, cover the mouth of the mate with your hand using a cloth to avoid burning yourself, and shake it until the embers go out.
5- Although it is not mandatory to repeat the operation, they recommend doing steps 2, 3 and 4 again to ensure better healing.
6- Rinse the mate with hot water and fill it with new yerba. Then moisten the herb with warm water and leave it overnight. The next day the mate will be ready to use!
